Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates

Customers Gain Confidence with the Green Address Bar

Extended Validation SSL gives Web site visitors an easy and reliable way to establish trust online. Only SSL Certificates with Extended Validation (EV) will trigger high security Web browsers to display a green address bar with the name of the organization that owns the SSL Certificate and the name of the Certificate Authority that issued it. The green bar shows site visitors that the transaction is encrypted and the organization has been authenticated according to the most rigorous industry standard

The Green Address Bar and Extended Validation

When shoppers visit a Web site secured with an Extended Validation SSL Certificate, high-security browsers will trigger the address bar to turn green and display the name of the organization listed in the certificate as well as the certificate’s security vendor. The browser and the security vendor control the display, making it difficult for phishers and counterfeiters to hijack your brand and your customers.

Who is eligible for EV?

The current identity vetting process established by the CA/Browser Forum requires all organizations applying for an EV SSL Certificate to be listed in an official registry in their area of jurisdiction. The following are eligible for EV:

  • Government agencies
  • Corporations
  • General partnerships
  • Unincorporated associations
  • Sole proprietorships with valid charters, certificates, licenses or equivalent documents

The registration status must be verifiable through the registration bureau. The individual ordering the EV SSL Certificate on behalf of the organization must hold verifiable employment with the company and the authority to place the order. No organizations located in interdicted countries or included under a prohibited list such as an embargo restriction may receive an EV SSL Certificate.

Who is NOT eligible for EV?

  • Individuals (that are not registered as Sole Proprietorships)

Who should buy EV certificates?

  • Banks & Financial Institutions
  • Ecommerce Sites
  • High Profile customer facing sites
  • Sites that may be a high risk target for phishing
  • Companies looking for that competitive advantage and increased sales

Maximize Online Sales Potential

Research shows that over half of Internet users today avoid buying online because they are afraid their financial information might be stolen, and 49% of those who express concern about their information security do not make online purchases at all. 86% of online shoppers report that they would feel more confident about entering personal information on sites using security indicators, such as a trust mark like the Norton Secured® Seal (Norton Secured Seal Datasheet). Because visitors using high-security browsers will see the name of your Extended Validation SSL provider in the security status bar, it is more important than ever to choose Symantec, the Web's most trusted security provider.
